The Last Goodbye
Created to honor the quiet, heartbreaking moment of saying goodbye to a decades of friendship and the love that remains long after they’re gone.
The hardest acts of love are often the quietest ones.
Our beloved Labrador, Duke, had been part of our family through so many of life's milestones. During his final year, we knew we were living on borrowed time as cancer, an FCE, and dementia slowly took their toll. Still, like so many families facing goodbye, we hoped for just a little more time.
The day before we made the heartbreaking decision to let him go, we gathered for family photos. In the middle of the session, Duke quietly walked over to my brother, Brad, rested his head in his lap, and simply... stayed there.
He was tired.
It was as though he knew.
That quiet moment became The Last Goodbye.
I painted this piece for Brad because no words could have captured what that moment meant. Sometimes love doesn't need grand gestures. Sometimes it's simply the quiet comfort of resting your head beside someone you've always trusted and loved.
Saying goodbye to those we love is one of life's greatest heartbreaks.
But I hope this painting serves as a reminder that the love we shared doesn't end with goodbye.
It simply becomes something we carry with us.
