Some lessons don't need to be taught.
They're simply passed on.
This was Baron's very first trip to Lake Keowee. Still just a puppy, he had never been swimming before. I remember watching with a mixture of excitement and complete panic as he leapt off the dock without hesitation.
To everyone's surprise...
He already knew exactly what to do.
The moment he hit the water, his instincts took over. But being Baron, simply swimming wasn't enough. He immediately decided he needed to race Duke.
Duke, nearly ten years older and a veteran of countless summers on the lake, accepted the challenge with the quiet confidence that defined him. He never hurried. Never boasted. He simply swam with the steady rhythm of experience while the enthusiastic little puppy paddled with everything he had, determined to catch him.
He never did.
Baron was adorably frustrated.
Watching them together felt like witnessing something much greater than a race. Duke wasn't trying to prove he was faster. He was simply showing the younger dog what was possible. Without a single lesson or command, one generation was quietly introducing the next to a place that would eventually become Baron's happiest place in the world.
That first swim became the beginning of countless summers chasing tennis balls, leaping from docks, and creating memories that would shape our family for years to come.
I titled this painting Passing the Torch because it reminds me that life's greatest legacies are rarely passed through words. They're passed through shared experiences, quiet examples, and the simple privilege of watching those we love discover the joy that once belonged to us.
Sometimes the greatest gift we can leave behind isn't teaching someone how to swim.
It's showing them a place they'll spend the rest of their life loving.
