Sometimes the photographs we treasure most are the ones we almost didn't take.
This was one of those photographs.
On the first morning when I woke up in my rental home in physical therapy school, I opened my door to find my roommate's dog, Emmi, patiently waiting outside for me. I laughed, grabbed my phone, and snapped a quick picture before we headed out for the day.
At the time, it felt like an ordinary moment.
I had no idea I was capturing the beginning of one of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
Emmi quickly became my constant companion. We ran countless miles together—often five to nine miles at a time, with plenty of sub-seven-minute miles mixed in. Florida's heat never seemed to faze her. She was always ready for another run, another trail, another adventure.
The only reason I ever willingly stopped running back then was for her.
Along the tropical forest trails, we'd pause beside the streams so she could cool off before continuing on our way. I'd always ask, "You okay?" She'd glance back over her shoulder with what looked unmistakably like a smile, then surge ahead as if to say, "Let's keep going."
She wasn't my dog.
But I loved her as if she were mine. I'd wrap her in blankets before class, take her to the veterinarian when she needed care, make sure she was fed, and happily spend as much time with her as I could.
She was simply my pal.
When physical therapy school came to an end, saying goodbye to Emmi was far harder than I ever expected. I wasn't just leaving a rented room.
I was leaving behind the little dog who had carried me through one of the most formative chapters of my life.
Miles Together is a reminder that the miles themselves are rarely what we remember. It's the companion beside us—the one who faithfully matches our pace, waits patiently at the door, and somehow makes every ordinary day feel a little brighter.
Some running partners help us reach the finish line.
The very special ones help shape the person we become along the way.
