The Chosen Family

Family isn't always defined by the one we're born into.

Sometimes it's the one we choose.

This cabin in McIntosh, Georgia, was built decades ago by five college friends who first met as football players at East Carolina University. They came from remarkably similar beginnings—homes marked by hardship, instability, and very little opportunity. For many of them, a football scholarship became the doorway to a future no one had imagined.

Together, they worked to build this cabin with their own hands. Long before their careers took them in different directions, this became a place where friendship was strengthened through hard work, laughter, fishing, storytelling, and countless evenings spent together.

Over the years, each of these men built extraordinary lives. They became successful business owners, respected physicians and surgeons, devoted husbands, fathers, and grandfathers. Yet despite all they accomplished, they continued returning to the same simple cabin.

Because this place was never really about the cabin.

It was about each other.

Today, children and grandchildren gather beneath the same roof, many unaware that this tradition began with five young men who refused to let the circumstances of their childhood define the rest of their lives. Together, they created something stronger than the families they had been born into.

They created a chosen family.
