Some careers are measured by accomplishments.
The most meaningful ones are measured by the lives they change.
I created Life in Balance as a retirement gift for my father-in-law, Dr. Larry Lundy, whose distinguished career as an otolaryngologist was devoted to helping people regain one of life's greatest gifts—the ability to hear, to move confidently through the world, and to find their balance again.
As a world-renowned specialist in disorders of the inner ear and vestibular system, he spent decades studying one of the body's most intricate and remarkable structures. The delicate white lines woven throughout the painting are inspired by the anatomy of the inner ear, representing the extraordinary complexity of the system he dedicated his life to understanding.
Yet this painting isn't simply about anatomy.
It's about balance in its fullest sense.
The vibrant colors reflect the many roles that shaped his life—physician, teacher, researcher, mentor, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Like the colors themselves, those roles overlap and intertwine, each contributing to a life of remarkable purpose and service.
Retirement marks the beginning of a new chapter. After spending decades helping others regain their balance, this painting celebrates the opportunity to embrace a different kind of balance—one filled with family, new adventures, quiet mornings, and the freedom to enjoy the life so thoughtfully built through years of dedication.
Life in Balance is a tribute to a man whose legacy extends far beyond the operating room. His greatest accomplishment isn't found in the procedures he pioneered or the recognition he earned, but in the countless lives made steadier, healthier, and more hopeful because he chose to devote his own life to caring for others.
