Some dogs never need to be taught how to love.
Honey simply knew.
She was the kind of dog who found happiness in the smallest rituals. Every day, she'd wander into the backyard to rub herself along the bushes, leaving little paths worn into the greenery that quietly marked her favorite place in the world. Long after she wandered away, those familiar trails remained—a gentle reminder that love has a way of leaving its mark.
But my favorite story about Honey had nothing to do with the backyard.
As the youngest son walked to a friend's house, Honey would faithfully escort him there, then settle onto the front porch to wait. It didn't matter whether the afternoon brought blazing sunshine or pouring rain. She stayed until it was time to walk him safely home. No one asked her to. She simply decided it was her job.
When the time finally came to say goodbye, it was impossible to miss how deeply she had been loved. Honey wasn't simply a family pet. She had been a steady presence through childhood, growing up alongside the people who loved her most.
Honey in the Ivy is a tribute to the quiet faithfulness of dogs who never ask for recognition. They simply show up, day after day, protecting us, waiting for us, and loving us with remarkable consistency. Long after they're gone, the paths they leave behind—in our gardens and in our hearts—remain.
